Hey there everybody!
I hope you all had a Happy Halloween! We had lots of fun here! After much discussion and deliberation, costumes were chosen. Jack originally wanted to be a bee, then a pumpkin, and he finally settled on a cat. After already having the bee and then getting the pumpkin, I borrowed the cat costume from his preschool. Henry wanted to be a ghost again. I tried my hardest to dissuade him from this idea. The last time he was a ghost, he ended up looking like a drunken frat boy at a toga party. But, we came up with an acceptable costume that didn't involve trying to keep eye holes in a sheet from slipping all over the place. William was easy. He wanted to be Harry Potter all the way. And with a borrowed scarf from Elle, a robe found in a bag of costumes from Peg, and some $4 glasses from the Halloween shop, we were all set. We loved having Kristen, Kevin and Lucy over for trick or treating again this year. Sadly, we forgot to take Lucy's picture. She was uber-cute in her Snow White dress. But here are the rest of us! Luke and I got into the spirit this year too!

A speedy update
My darling sister way out in Colorado has filed a complaint that I'm updating my writer's site all the time and I have ignored this one. All I can say is yes, yes I have. I'm trying to be super diligent about posting each weekday on my other site (www.megankbickel.blogspot.com) and I'm flat-out avoiding this one. Why? Because I'm lazy! : )
So, I will give you a quick update here:
Jack: Is LOVING preschool. He has a totally fit every day he doesn't have school. He finds it unfair and downright unjust that he doesn't get to go everyday. Today I told him (for the 5 millionth time) to get his finger out of his nose. He replied, "But I found something!" Such is Jack.
Henry: Is LOVING kindergarten. I admit I was worried about Henry taking to the schedule and rules of school, but it was so unfounded. If you ask him, he will sing you a little song about how to spell any color. Although, I haven't heard one for cerulean yet. He recently really enjoyed a unit on apples. After coming home everyday of the week with a new fun apple fact to share, Luke asked him on Friday what he learned in school that day. He replied, "Well, we didn't learn anything about apples," in a totally annoyed and aghast manner. He is in soccer, but getting tired of it.
William: Is such a third grader! The gentle call of the need to argue with one's parents because you know far more than they ever could apparently starts in third grade. Who knew? He is, of course, doing beautifully in school. He actually cried both days I made him stay home from school last week when he had a fever. Strange kid, that one! : ) He has lost his other upper front tooth and looks adorable. He rocks soccer as an awesome defender and wants to play every chance he gets.
Luke & I: VERY BUSY! We hardly know if we are coming or going, but such is life.
Happy now, Beth?! : )

Wait, what color is it?
I have to get back into the blogging habit! I try to use this blog as a family diary too and it seems we won't have anything to remember about this wild and crazy summer, except a few pictures!
So, what have we been doing? Well, tons! The summary:
So, what have we been doing? Well, tons! The summary:
- Kickball. Henry's first foray into organized sports was humorous, to say the least. Most of the games were spent with the coach and high school helpers yelling for Henry to go here or there. He didn't understand teams moving from kicking to the outfield. He didn't understand base running. He kept trying to kick the ball two or three times when it was rolled to him. At one point he just went up to a high school helper and said, "I just don't know where I'm supposed to be."
- Down and Dirty Camp. William had a filthy good time at day camp at Eagle Creek Park. He came home with something gross either on his clothes, in his shoes, or as a "project" they had done. Henry also attended a shorter/cleaner version of camp. Henry did come home with a mud mustache one day. But William took the cake for gross bags of muddy clothes that came home most days. And drying sneakers in the sun only works if it doesn't rain overnight. Just a tip.
- Best Henry quote. I found something sticky on the floor in the kitchen. I yelled out, "Who left this sticky mess and didn't clean it or tell me they needed help cleaning it?" Henry replied, "It wasn't me...wait, what color is it?"
- Best Jack quote (not for the delicate or girly among you). We took Henry into the bathroom at a store and he wasn't able to go. I told him he just wasn't ready to go yet. Jack said, "Henry, you should try using your penis."
- Best William quote. Every time I ponder out loud what we should have for lunch/dinner/snack he answers, "chocolate cake." He is so my child.
- Unintentional corn. As Luke says, "How Hoosier are we? We grow corn without even trying!" Yes, we have a stalk of corn growing on the side of our deck. Our best guess is that a squirrel transported a kernel of the squirrel corn we leave out for them. So, we actually have a fully formed stalk of corn with an ear growing on it. I'll harvest it in the fall and feed it to the squirrel. After all, he planted it.
- Driving highs and lows. The summer started with me bumping my friend's garage door when I was coming to pick up Henry from a play date. Note to self: Do not try to hand something to kid in the backseat when you haven't put the car in park. That was a costly mistake, as we had to replace the entire garage door. Did you know a mini-van bumper is the same height as a garage door joint between the first and second panels? And you can't replace just a couple panels on a 15 year old discontinued door? That's just helpful info for everyone. On the plus side, my kids are troopers when it comes to long car trips. We had a few rough patches, but they traveled to Mulberry, Michigan, Baltimore, and Cape Cod with few complaints or incidents.
- Michigan Adventures. On our annual Michigan trip we went to Michigan Adventure's theme park. William proved quite the dare devil! We had no idea the kid feels the need for speed. He was game to go on all the roller coasters and water slides his older cousins did. Luckily Luke took him on these things. If it was up to me, he'd be riding the carousel all day.
- Cape Cod creepy crawlies. On our Cape Cod trip we did a lot of fun stuff, but I think the boys enjoyed an afternoon at the beach with my cousin Owen the most. They spent the time digging up and catching crabs and snails. Yuck.
- Sophisticated taste. William and Jack discovered the high life and ate a lobster, cooked to perfection by my Grandpa. Jack also ate crabs in Baltimore. Henry sustained himself almost entirely on hot dogs the entire summer. I took every chance on our east coast trip to eat as much seafood as possible.
- How do you do this all day? This is the theme of those who are lucky enough to spend a few hours with all my boys at once. I think all of my cousins/aunts/uncles/nieces/in-laws asked me this at least once this summer. I have to say, the real question is how do I NOT do it, now that they are in school. I am so used to the pace and noise of my children, I'm having a heck of a time slowing down.
- Sweltering State Fair. Oppressive heat has been a trend all summer too. It has actually kept us inside much more than I would have wanted this summer. But nothing keeps me from the Indiana State Fair. Heck, I brought Jack when he was a month old! But our visit this year was abbreviated because of the heat. With heat indexes in the triple digits and humidity that made it hard to catch your breath, we skipped some of our traditional stops and made the most of indoor exhibits!
- Children's Museum, Zoo, Monkey Joe's, beaches, parks, Chuck E. Cheese, Tom Chapin Concert, library summer programs, swimming lessons, lunches at the high school, play dates, Chicago anniversary trip, water balloons, slip and slide, fireworks, sparklers, and on and on and on. We truly had a wonderful summer filled with lots of activities, trips, and memories. It was great to visit with so much family this summer as well. I think we jammed as much as we possibly could into this one. So, I'm calling it. Game over. Back to real life.

Summer & Back to School
Well, I've ignored the blog all summer, but it is back to business, as today is the first day of school for William and Henry. And yes, I've been crying all morning. Who had the big idea of letting our kids grow up? It is an awful plan! I'll get to stories later, but I wanted to post some more pictures from birthdays this summer and the official first day of school pictures (the last three above). Henry was very proud of his backpack, so it had to be photographed too. And Jack needed to have a picture taken in his new monkey sweatshirt (thanks Grandma & Grandpa!). My little men just aren't so little anymore!

May photo extravaganza!
As you all know, May is a busy month in this Speedway home. I have many pictures to share! First are Henry's 5th birthday pictures (from the little family party we had here). Then are pictures from Community Day at the track. The most glorious of days! The family picture includes the great Davey Hamilton and the young guy with the boys is the rookie Sabastian Saavedra. If you don't recognize the guy with Jack, I don't know that I can call you my friend anymore, but it is Helio Castroneves! Helio is going for his fourth 500 win and he is on the pole. He could be making serious history, so tune in on Sunday any of you non-500 winners!! I demand it! : )
Further down in the next post, you'll see Henry's preschool graduation, William's Spring soccer team (the Sparkplugs) and William and Henry participating in the Rookie Run downtown. Just another slow month for the Bickel family, huh?

Lots of pictures
Okay, the first three pictures are from the Speedway Lion's Easter Egg hunt. Then you have William and Jack from a soccer game. Then is Henry with his class bear "Fred" who came to stay with us for a couple days. Next are some pictures from William's First Communion. Then you have Alex, who thought he belonged in my work "in" box. Finally, my little Henry in his cap and gown for preschool graduation pictures!

Quick check-in
Howdy folks!
I thought I'd better put something up here because I've been negligent lately. I have to say that I've just been lazy. Spring Break and Easter last week certainly kept us busy and getting back into our routine this week has given me a good excuse to just ignore this blog. I don't feel like I have a ton to share right now, but I'll give you a quick update just for sharing's sake.
Our kitty cats are fully entrenched in our family now. The spend the day jumping into my lap while I try to type, lounging on the back of the couch and looking our the window, chasing toys the boys fling around the house, and just being cute in general. Allergies are running rampant at our house, but we have determined it is the spring bloom, not our cats causing this (since we were having just as many problems when we were away from the house for a few days).
William has started soccer again. His first game is this morning. We are expecting to be cold, but William is very excited. He is on Coach Jon's team again, so he is feeling comfortable and ready to go! He got to go have play dates with his friend Luke and his friend Lindsay (wink, wink) over Spring Break.
Henry is doing the traditional 4 year old flip flop between incredibly cute and sweet and then turning into a dragon. He has fine tuned his ability to tune me out. But he also was sitting in the hallway this morning talking to Audi, the cat, telling him that he should be very proud of William for doing so well on MarioKart. He got to have his friend Johnny over this week and they had a grand time.
Jack is just getting so big. He loves school and Ms. Kenny. He is still eagerly awaiting next year when he is "three and can go to CDD". He means Sunday school (CCD). He has been very annoyed all year that his brothers get to go and he doesn't. He is my little helper most of the time, but he is also really starting to venture into my least favorite age/attitude...THREE.
Luke and I are doing well too, though very busy. I routinely wonder how I can keep up with all that is going on and know that it will only get worse as the kids get older and involved in more. How do you people with older kids do it?
In other news, both of our neighbors have put their houses on the market. Logically, I know it is because they are both now empty nesters, but I can't help but wonder if it has to do with my inability to keep a nice side garden and my extremely loud mouth when it comes to yelling at my children. : ) Any one want to be my neighbor?
Alex, the cat, has taken up residence on my lap again, so I'm going to end this, as it is difficult to type when my hand is being nuzzled. I'll try to post again soon!

2 New Bickel Boys
No, I'm not pregnant! Yesterday we adopted two beautiful little boy kitties! Audi and Alex have joined our family. We are cautiously optimistic about allergy issues with William and myself. We have both only had slight reactions and we think they will fade away as we all get used to one another. Audi and Alex are three years old and come to us from a very sweet lady who is getting married and couldn't keep them because her fiance was allergic. They were obviously very well loved and came with all their toys in tow. Needless to say, my three boys are besides themselves with joy. William has been asking for a pet for about six and a half years! In the pictures Audi is wearing the blue collar and Alex is wearing green (and if you can't see the collar, it is Alex.) Alex is a little more timid, but both are warming up very quickly and love attention and being pet, but not being held.

Time again for...
Another "day in the life" post. : )
Pretty smooth morning getting everyone up and ready. Although, the first thing out of Henry's mouth this morning was, "I wish Orion was still here." I told him we all wished that and gave him big hugs. Luke was actually able to see everyone this morning before taking off, which doesn't always happen. I was sure to save the toilet paper roll for William, who has taken to being a scavenger to "build things in my lab." His "lab" is his room, which he has suddenly taken a liking to since I cleaned it two weeks ago. Later in the morning, we walked William to school for the first time in forever because it was not frigid this morning. Henry seemed to think this was an open invitation to wear a sleeveless vest thingy instead of the jacket I told him to wear. So, most of the walk was accompanied by "I'm so cold, Mom!" On the other hand, William insisted on wearing his winter coat, a hat, and gloves. I'm sure he was sweating by the time he walked into his classroom. And Jack wanted to be carried the whole time. I think when he looks at me, he must see a camel.
Back home, I fired up the computer to "go to work." Henry picked out which worksheets he wanted to do and Jack said he really wanted to watch "that big Clifford show", which means he didn't want to watch the Clifford episodes on PBS, he wanted to watch the full-length movie on DVD. So, the early morning was spent with me bothering my co-workers with far too many e-mails, Henry doing four or five worksheets and Jack watching Clifford. Then came a Mario Brothers break. Anyone who has talked to Henry for even a minute since Christmas knows that this kid is totally obsessed with the new Mario Brothers Wii game. I have instated an every-other-day rule to try to squelch some of the obsession. Basically, it just results in me hearing "today is a video game day" or "I can play video games tomorrow" constantly, but oh well. So, Henry and I played for a little bit with Jack on my lap (kind of hinders my game, but he is too cute to deny). Then it was laundry time and then more work.
At lunch I decided it was too beautiful to be inside any longer, and we packed up for the zoo. When I suggested this to Henry he said, "can't we go when William gets out of school? He loves the zoo." How sweet! I explained that it is supposed to rain later, so we couldn't wait for William, so Henry agreed to go. I made the boys sandwiches for the car. Jack shredded his and handed it back to me in pieces. From what I could see of the remains, he didn't actually take one bite. I told the boys it would be a quick zoo trip because I needed to be back working, so they could each pick two things to do. The playground was the first choice for both of them. Why do we go to the zoo? To play on the playground. One fun moment came when Henry was running around a corner and crashed into a lady who was running to stop her 2 year old from touching some stranger's baby. The lady fell in slow motion and, in order to not crush him, she managed to pick Henry up as he fell and kind of did an army roll when she hit the ground. Henry bounced up and ran off to play. The lady said, "oh geez, I hope that little boy is okay." I replied, "He is very durable, don't worry." The lady then turned to her husband and said, "okay, I'm embarrassed, let's go." I thought the whole thing was rather impressive!
Jack picked dolphins. Henry then chose the lions, which are as far away from the entrance of the zoo as is possible. As we were walking back from the lions (a VERY long walk) Henry said he needed to be carried. I told him he was too big. He said, "I heard mommies can carry big boys for a while." "Where did you hear that?" "I read it in a book when I was at the library." "You can't read yet." "Yes, I can. I read that." Then later, as he was balancing on a log and I told him to be careful, he said, "I don't have to be careful. My body is made of metal and you just can't see it." He also informed me on the way home that he has super x-ray eyes and can see into outer space. What world does this kid live in? Henryland, that's where. I hope you all can visit one day, because it is a magical place! Of course, the tall tales are easier to deal with than the questions that he was stuck on yesterday. "Mom, what is gravity?" "Then how come I can jump?" "What makes me walk?" "Why can't I touch the sun?" "Why can't I feel the hot of the sun?"
Home again and snacks were in order. Then more laundry, back to work, and Henry back on the Wii for a bit. Then I needed to vacuum the living room. Not sure why I needed to do that at 1:30 exactly, but the mood struck, so I followed. I need a new vacuum desperately. Luke was actually going to get me one for Valentine's day, but was afraid of what people would say/think when I told them he got me a vacuum for Valentine's day. I told him it didn't matter because that is what I want/need. He disagreed. : )
A quick call to William's school to let them know I'd be picking him up by car today. More laundry that Jack helped me with ("this goes with William's shirts", "this is a Henry shirt", "these are Daddy pants"). More work. Went to pick up William, who quickly burst into tears upon hearing we went to the zoo without him. I asked if he had had a bad day and he said that his friend, Elijah, had said they weren't friends anymore (which happens about once every six weeks with Elijah) and all he did was work all day. Poor kid! Sun Chips for snack time cheered him up a little.
After reminding William 75 times to sit down and do his homework, he finally finished it. Then it was an evening of boys running around and playing. Dinner was grilled cheese and french fries, which I thought would go over big, but no one ate much. If anyone can ever find a pattern to my children's eating habits, please let me know!
Henry did puzzles, and Luke helped him. Jack played up in their bedroom and screamed like a banshee (see I got that word in there, Ellie!) when he saw a ladybug fly across the room. William listened to his MP3 player and danced around like a maniac. Luke made the inadvisable mistake of getting down on the floor and he was promptly overtaken with boys. It was like watching someone disappear in quicksand.
I had exhausted my patience by bedtime and was starting to snap at the boys, so I hurried them along to bed. Three stories later, I'm back down here finishing this blog, that I've been writing as the day has unfolded. I'm ready to sit down with my husband and be able to talk to him without, "but Mom, I really want to know how gravity works!" interrupting us.

Great Expectations
The other day at dinner William informed all of us that he would like to be the President someday. Jack piped up saying that he wants to be a race car driver (duh!). Henry said, "I want to work at Chuck E. Cheese!" So ambitious!
For some reason this didn't post when I wrote it a week ago, so I'm posting now, even though I've told just about everyone this story!

Photographs and Memories
Hello folks!
Sorry for the long delay since the last post. Things are just as crazy as ever in our house. I wanted to post briefly about Orion, our often-mentioned rental cat. Yesterday we had to make the agonizing choice to put him down. It was a very difficult day of explanations and crying. So, I just wanted to mention how grateful we are to have had him as "our" kitty for a little while. He was a spectacular friend to my sister, Beth, and I know she is going to miss him very much. I'm posting a picture of him from yesterday and then just some random pictures of my boys (to off-set the sad).
